I will be co-presenting with my colleague Dr. Karen S. Whelan-Berry at the 4th Canadian Conference on Positive Psychology in Toronto. Our workshop demonstrates how to super-charge adult learning by incorporating character strengths and other positive psychology foundations into the design and delivery of courses, workshops, team meetings, and coaching sessions. If you’re a positive psychology enthusiast and will be attending the conference, or if you’d like more information, let’s connect!
Description
When learning is deliberately connected to key foundations of human flourishing it becomes supercharged, creating more meaningful immediate and long-term living of the learning. This workshop presents a framework for creating and delivering such learning. One of the greatest joys and challenges of being a teacher/trainer is turning inspiration into action. Although experiential and embodied teaching/learning approaches continue to grow, the challenges of building meaningful practices from new knowledge persist. Positive psychology identifies key foundations for flourishing: meaning and purpose, awareness of the mind/body connection, positive relationships and emotions, and character strengths. When learning design and delivery incorporates these foundations, a framework emerges that goes beyond experiential and embodied learning. We refer to this framework as LEAP because it: 1. Leverages connections between the body, soul and mind in the learning experience, 2. Engages reflection to integrate learning into the learner’s relationships and contexts, 3. Acknowledges the importance of activating personal strengths and positive emotions in learning, and 4. Promotes practice in the immediate learning moment and beyond. Our results suggest more immediate skill/habit formation and a variety of positive changes.
